A search for proximity with the human being

The classical theatre technique together with Shakespeare’s text and the expressivities of physical theatre are the basic tools with which the actor Marcio Mello works

"The need for auto-expression was what lured me into the theatre", affirms the actor Marcio Mello, 32, paulistano of birth. Marcio initiated his career 11 years ago in the famous Macunaíma Drama School in São Paulo Brazil. Soon after finishing his BA he was invited by Walter Portella to take part in a production of the “Trojan Women” by Euripides, which was staged at the legendary Sergio Cardoso theatre 1995.
The play gained the prize of the best play of the year in São Paulo’s cultural festival in 1996. In the same year Marco Antonio Braz invited him to take part in his production of "Arturo Ui" by Brecht staged on the historical Oficina Theatre also in São Paulo.

A Brazilian in love with Shakespeare

Marcio Mello’s passion took him across the Atlantic to start a Postgraduate course in classical theatre at the world famous Central School of Speech and Drama in London. The school has produced names such as Gabriel Garcia Bernal ("Motorcycle Diaries"), Lawrence Olivier and Vanessa Redgrave. In 2003 Marcio started his postgraduate study completing his studies in 2005. However, Marcio was on the “scene” before Central School of Speech and Drama spending time with Desmond Jones’ Physical Theatre Company, which Marcio studied and performed with. Desmond Jones’ group opened the 2002 "Embankment Gardens Festival" the renowned summer physical theatre festival in London and have performed on many fringe stages around London.

Marcio has also performed in productions of "Hamlet", "As You like it" and "Oedipus Rex". His most recent appearance was in "Harlequin - the Server of Two Masters" by Carlos Goldoni, a play combining elements of Comedia Del Art and which, in this production, fused physical theatre and classical text. The show was a sell out at the New End Theatre in Hampstead with an extended run of 3 extra weeks and the company was also invited to take part in Prague’s Festival theatre.
The techniques Marcio acquired during his work with Shakespearian text - exploring its nuances and complexities – together with his passion and commitment to physical theatre make Marcio Mello a mature actor who is distinguished by his versatility.
