To
mark the publication of Graffiti World, the ultimate
graffiti book, stylish urban venue AKA will be hosting
the official Graffiti World launch party on Wednesday
27th October 2004. At this special one-off event,
some of the original pioneers of UK hip hop will
come together at AKA, to celebrate an essential
new publication and the global graffiti movement.
This
is an unmissable opportunity to hear the very best
old school hip hop, breaks and beats - block party
style. Headlining on the night is none other than
Daddy Gee, of seminal UK band Massive Attack - a
collective who have always been heavily associated
with the graffiti movement. Also playing on the
night are several long-standing champions of the
UK scene: revered hip hop producer Skitz, multi-talented
artist Jadell and also Zaki Dee, a key figure -
previously of 80s graffiti crew Chrome Angelz.
Alongside
these exclusive DJ sets is an exclusive Graffiti
World exhibition by artists featured in the book.
Opening on the night of the launch party and running
until December at AKA, it will feature original
artworks created especially for display at AKA -
an airy, high-ceiling industrial warehouse conversion
ideal for an exhibition of this kind.
The
exhibition will feature works by Zaki Dee and Pride
(Chrome Angelz) alongside new pieces by Inkie, one
of the first ever UK artists, Keinom, author of
Graffiti World, Kid Acne, most famous for his artwork
on the Ninja Tune hip hop label Big Dada, She 1,
Australian artist Stormie, and Nick Walker, the
Bristolian who now applies graffiti to film and
fashion. All artists themselves will be in attendance
on the night, making the Graffiti World launch party
a focal event for the graffiti community and all
hip hop enthusiasts. Goodies including posters,
prints, books, T-shirts and painted hats will
also be available, adding to the night's celebrations!
The
cream of the UK scene have chosen to come together
at AKA in honour of Graffiti World because it is
a stunningly detailed document of an urban art-form
and its creative explosion across the world. This
book picks up where the underground graffiti classic
Subway Art, published by Thames and Hudson 20 years
ago, left off! Taking the reader on a tour throughout
the Americas and Europe to almost every corner of
the globe, the book contains over 2,000 illustrations
and 180 featured artists, illustrating graffiti's
evolution, importance and boundless creativity.
Rights
to Graffiti World have been snapped up across the
globe, resulting in a global book launch across
several key countries in October 2004, with events
in Berlin, Paris, Barcelona, New York and Toyko.
That's the strength of graffiti today, and that's
the dedication it continues to inspire worldwide.
But West Central Street, London WC1 is the one special
corner of the world where the official Graffiti
World launch party will be - on 27th October at
AKA. Join us there.
