In
order to understand my process of making
art, I have to look backwards, to my childhood.
My passion for art began early on in life.
As a child I used to transform the remains
of consumer goods and foodstuff into toys.
For example, I learned how to change corncob
and a few sticks into a cow. I watched my
grandfather transforming tomato sauce tins
and small pieces of clothes into oil lamps.
The
act of transforming one thing in another
doesn’t mean art, but it is the first
step in developing an art object.
My
intention is to make art with consideration
to my personal background, the surrounding
environment, the material that I am working
with and my capacity to transform things.
I
strongly believe that the materials (a piece
of paper, wood, or a bicycle tyre) have
their own personality and history. Usually,
when I commence a work, I try to consider
the suggestions from the material. For example,
if I am working with a piece of wood, I
will try to find out traces and suggestions
given to me through the wood. When I’m
working with a concrete object, I start
to add colour, lines, forms and other objects
to create a new one; this new object is
also going to be filled with my personal
symbols: my imaginary code, my signature.
Through this, I am sure that the collective
memories,
the human symbols, are reflected in the
work. |

When
I am working with a functional object, for example
a suitcase, I will consider the layout, the purpose
of the suitcase up until that moment, but I am not
interested in preserving that function. From this
moment on a new object starts. For instance the
surface may be painted in another colour, forms
or pictures may be added, and then the suitcase
is displaced from its original purpose. It is possible
to recognize its origin as a suitcase, but also
its transformation: It is not a suitcase anymore.
My
goal is to work as freely as possible with the material
I have. I like to look for a result that represents
my own personality, but also at the environment
were I am located. I am a multi-media artist concerned
with the social construction of art and its hierarchies,
the differentiation between low and high culture,
folk art and gallery art, identity, audience participation,
collaboration and democratic practice as opposed
to individualist approach.
