:: INTRODUCTION

The Educational Group – Minhoca, is the association that accomplishes the Minhoca Project which is located in Morro do Chapéu, in the Bahia state of Brazil, acts since 2001 as a Center for Creativity based on a holistic proposition of education for children and young people in need of care.

Based on this holistic start, the Project works for a sustainable education taking art as the main instrument in the learning process. Art in the Minhoca Project is considered as a powerful tool which uses theater, dance, music, capoeira and plastic arts to open the way to a complete vision of reality. Art also precedes the exercise of multi-knowledge, promoting the learning of the meaning of things from daily life, taking into consideration the individual and the group practices as well as personal experiences for the education of the citizen.

:: THE YEAR 2003

Recognized by the community, visitors, technical team and by the students themselves (as seen in the appendix section), the Minhoca Project had exceptional results in the year of 2003.

By focusing on the person as a unique and whole human being, the Project acts to reach physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual aspects, respecting the differences, having happiness as the most important aspect of the knowledge. Therefore, without any fear of misinterpretation, the Project based its activities also on the development of the capacity of loving. Because the capacity to love is recognized as a precious field to flourish the human being. The most important pedagogical and methodological principle adopted by the Project was to work the theory-practice relation, emphasizing the practice and using the everyday life as a basic reference for building knowledge.

This way, even having to face a hard social and economical reality of which they are victims, we have noticed the development of a critical thinking, an esthetical creativity and an intuition of the persons involved. It was therefore possible to exercise the rights to be children and to be creative and happy.

It has been said by a studious biologist that in order to learn, it is necessary to get rid of the ideas, presuppositions and certainties lent by life. In a certain way, it has been emphasized that artistic activities ease and stimulate the contact with sentiment, strengthening the self-esteem, harmonizing the relationships and allowing the conclusion that art also provides a better comprehension of what is being instructed.

Step by step, it has become clearer that the work of the Project is helping to create a way to provide a deserving life, a spiritual evolution and fraternal relationships. Because it takes the premise that says “To educate is to educate yourself. To be born again is to allow a new creation of yourself. From clay that we come from, to do an art work.”

We would like to thank and acknowledge all those who have supported us: Brasiliniciative, Bairotz Group, Frank Bemerlaine, Ana Maria Jacobs, Anne, Coordination of the Coburg Samba Festival, Coordination of the Noe Detrizal Samba Festival, AAS Group, CESE and the Nigôlo Group in Germany, without all of them, this work would not be true.

Considering the limitations on the translation and the own characteristic of the educational proposal as being somehow subjective, we have reported here only a few aspects of the most relevant ones. We hope that the reader can perceive the dynamic and in some way limited process of this challenge we call Minhoca Project.

Tour to the Tareco

Tareco is a thermal waters place located at 36 km from Morro do Chapéu. The children dream to go there as the place offers several fun possibilities to play in the water. They keep the memories of these days forever in their lives.

Capoeira Presentations

...capoeira for the harmony of the being! This sentence defines completely how the capoeira Angola is practiced in the Minhoca Project. The group made several presentations accompanied by a band with many instruments which “contaminated” with joy whenever they passed.

...street theater, presented in the streets of the city, using music, etc.
This story was written by a local psychiatrist using a popular metric (very famous in the popular literature, called “cordel”). This story tells Christ’s birth and makes a parallel with the life of the poor man in the northeast of Brazil.

Group Moment

...kindly called “circle”, this meeting happens every day when all the participants seat in a circle so that everybody can see each other. The circular form favors the integration among the people, and in the circle everybody is equal. This is one of the most important moments of the Minhoca Project because it is the moment dedicated to the group expression (discussions, prayers, presentations, acknowledgments, emotions, meals, etc.). It is a moment when each one of the members must be present to celebrate harmony of sharing.

Annual Review
...one week for the preparation of the technical team

Closing party

...farewell with exchange of presents made by the students themselves, assembling of the Christmas decoration, poetry, delivery of certificates, music, dance and a little bit of sadness because the students do not like being away from the Project.

Special Thanks

Rui Seabra for his help on the dance classes
Jorge Rocha for his help in the Christmas Play

:: OPINIONS FROM STUDENTS

I think the Minhoca Project is a true family for all of us.
I enjoy spending time with the people of the Project and I believe that it makes families with kids very happy to have it. This year was great to be here again. I love coming here to see my “brothers”. I believe that God is the most sublime being in the universe and He will always protect the Project.
Nothing can keep me from coming here because I like it a lot.

Fátima Pires, 15 years old.

Reinaldo 13 years old.
The Project this year was great because it motivated us to always go for what we want. We did several cools things such as the Children’s Week program in the schools. This program encouraged a lot the children because before it they did not think of their future, but now they know they can be well informed citizens in the world that we live. The Project exists to make people think about life, stimulating them to use the artistic spirit inside themselves. The Project exists to teach people.
I only had happy moments here because I was always learning. With music, dance, ceramics, informatics, capoeira. That is why I say that we should have many more of these Projects in the city. I wan to thank all the teachers for having made me an artist inside and a good student. This place is sacred.

Marcio Santos, 16 years old.

Jaqueline, 13 years old.

My name is Jaqueline and I will talk a little bit about the Minhoca Project. I will talk not only about the year 2003 but all its existence. The Project is great and it is amazing to have a place so important for so many people. During the year we learned a lot of good things that probably we would never learn anywhere else. We learned how to be happy. This word is so simple, but very few people seem to know its meaning. In the Minhoca Project, everybody knows. Be happy is to have friends, care, comprehension, organization and also to learn what is good.
This year had a lot of nice things such as the trip to the Tareco, the Independence Day parade, the visits to other schools, the parties that we organized such as the Halloween and the June party. The Project means a lot to me because it is here that my dreams come true. We have a lot of nice teachers and true friends too. This Project is a special one that’s why I come here, to also feel this same special light.

Marley 10, years old.
I learned a lot of things here in 2003. ceramics, embroidering, computers, capoeira, painting, etc. Thanks to the extra classes in the Project, I went very well in school this year. We had a lot of celebrations this year: Mother’s day, Independence Day (which was the best parade I have ever being in my life). Now the year is almost over and everybody here is sad to leave. I hope to come back next year. Merry Christmas!!

:: OPINIONS FROM THE COMMUNITY

Without any bad interference from the government, the Minhoca Project brought to Morro do Chapéu what the people like to see. WORK! A beautiful work, well done and with the responsibility to show the simplicity of art can transform Morro do Chapéu. We know that there are difficulties and that sometimes people do not respect this project which has been doing so many good things for the people in need. Hope the work continues because this is a good example of culture and education!

Milton Pinto Filho - Artist

A cultural pleasure with a great structure, educationally and socially speaking, but above all and example to be followed…(hopefully by those who only talk about they will do but don’t do)…we should praise and honor this type of work called “the unity at the service of the community”!!
Congratulations to those who have given their souls to this Project. It is already giving results as we can see from talking to the students…. Congratulations to all who believed in this project and to those who today work for it. Greetings!!

A fraternal hug - Prof. Rui Seabra

I felt very happy to visit the Minhoca Project and to feel a nice environment of harmony and happiness among all the children. Morro do Chapéu needs more projects like this, to attend children and young people and to help them to become true citizens. This project deserves all the support and should be visited to anybody who does not know it. Congratulations for the great work.

Sheila Karina – Chief of the 4ª CIA. of the Police

I have already visited the Minhoca Project and I think it is a very important for Morro do Chapéu. It serves as an example for other initiatives like this. Congratulations for the great Independence Day Parade.

José Ribeiro – Secretary of Social Work

The Minhoca Project is more than a project for me. It is a school where the young people learn not only what is taught in class but to be a citizen of the world.

Maria Tereza Dourado Lima Vieira - Dean of the Public School

The Minhoca Project is a real ART, it is a real attempt to form conscientious people through education and a more meaningful life, raising the interest in the children for what is around them. Don’t Stop!! Nothing is more grateful than creating citizens!!

Daianny Oliveira -Schoold Coordinator

I believe that the Minhoca Project is one of the main tools of citizenship teaching to our children. It serves as an example to everyone.

Dantinhas - Pres. da Sociedade F. Minerva

This is a project that offers educational and physical classes to children as well as artistic activities. It raises the critical sense in the students making them more collaborative. It helps them to have more quality in life with more perspectives in the future.

M ª da Graça M. D. Dourado Lima - Dean of School Adalberto

Morro do Chapéu needs a lot of Minhoca Projects. This is undoubtedly one of the most important social projects in Morro do Chapéu and should be supported by everybody in the community. Congratulations to all the children, their families and the team of the Minhoca Project.

Cleová –Council representative

I learned about the Minhoca Project when I went there to participate in one of its activities as a seldom collaborator. I feel very happy to see those children enjoying the activities, using their creativity and learning citizenship. The students are very well attended by the personnel of the Project. You have my support and consideration. Congratulations.

Dr. Jorge Rocha - Psychiatrist

I believe that Morro do Chapéu can be different and the Minhoca Project is a great example that good will, love, dedication and above all, ethics make a difference.
