SEU JORGE,
SAMBASTIC SINGER-SONGWRITER FROM THE CITY OF GOD |
HOT OFF THE PRESS
* Disaster has struck this week's episode of Jools Holland's
late-night music show, Later ... With Jools Holland,
following an ill-tempered dispute with Her Majesty's
Immigration Service.
On Tuesday, the Brazilian musician Seu Jorge flew
all the way to London in order to perform on the show,
presided over by Jools which was recorded later that
night. Unfortunately, he was detained at Luton Airport
for having an out-of-date work permit.
It took nine hours for the clipboard merchants at
Immigration to discover that he'd applied for a new
one, and could therefore enter the UK. But by then,
he was tired, emotional and in no fit state to perform.
Accordingly, Jorge jumped back onto a plane, and
has now returned to Brazil. "The BBC did their
best to get him in, and even the Home Office got involved,"
says his agent.
"He's distraught and I don't think he'll be
coming back to this country for a long time. I've
spent four years trying to get one of my artistes
onto Jools Holland's show, and look what happens."

no programa de televisão "Later... with
Jools Holland", da BBC, ficou detido no aeroporto
Luton durante nove horas, segundo o diário
"The Independent".
lotou o teatro Royal Festival Hall. Embora a maior
Bowie.

From
City of God with love, Mr Jorge makes his UK
debut on the crest of a wave.
So far no one
has managed to bridge the gap between the old
and the new Afro-Rio life. No one has managed
to touch black and white, rich and poor, young
and old with a simple and wise street poetry,
malandro culture. No one has, but if anyone
does it will be Seu Jorge.

Exploding from the screen in the role of Knockout
Ned, written for him in City of God, Jorge has paralleled
his charismatic screen presence with a burgeoning
role in Rio's music scene.
He is a singer and writer of urban
sambas and a man who walks the walk but his lyrical
guitar playing and songs belie his City of God image
while maintaining a similar intensity.
Saved from the street by joining
a theatre company he formed the band Farofa Carioca
in the mid nineties and enjoyed considerable success
in Rio with them.
The new year sees the release of his latest album
Cru and his role on screen and in the soundtrack of
Wes Anderson's film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
(alongside Bill Murray, Angelica Houston WillemDafoe
and Cate Blanchett).
