‘… A young company who are intent on forging a
unique voice for themselves..."
Lyn Gardner - The Guardian
Dendê Collective has a new project, which aims once
again at bringing Brazilian theatre to the UK. The play AGRESTE
(DRY LANDS) by the playwright Newton Moreno of the Brazilian
state of Pernambuco in a translation into English by Mark
O’Thomas will be presented at The Lyric Hammersmith,
Studio in their season the MIX on 01st September at 20:00
h. The tickets are free, so if you want to reserve your seat
to see AGRESTE, you’d better call the theatre’s
box office as soon as possible. When AGRESTE was presented
in São Paulo, it was raved by both audience and the
critics.
A sell-out success in Brazil, Dende Collective perform the
European premiere of a new translation. Newton Moreno is certainly
one of the most promising playwrights that have emerged in
Brazil. He won both the Shell and APCA prize for best playwright
with AGRESTE in 2004. The Royal Court Theatre in London which
is specialized in new writing brought Newton to London to
its International Playwriting Residency project this August.
He was chosen to represent Brazil amongst raising stars in
this field from all over the globe.
The
MIX season of the Lyric Hammersmith, Studio is a groundbreaking
event, which offers the chance to check out new work by some
of the sharpest artists making theatre today. The Mix is divided
into two strands: ROUGH (pieces in the early stages of development
or a try-out of an ambitious idea) and READY (a show that
is ready to stand on its own two feet for a full run of performances).
AGRESTE (DRYLANDS) is a ROUGH performance you will be able
to speak to the members to the company after the show and
express your thoughts and help them to shape how they will
develop the piece further.
Dendê
Collective is putting together 04 actors (Brazil, Spain, Portugal
and Australia), the director André Pink and the playwright-translator
Mark O’Thomas to investigate ways in how to stage Newton
Moreno’s text. The audience will watch a first draft
of the full production that will be presented in the autumn
of 2006. Dendê Collective is proud of presenting shows
that are developed through thoughtful research processes.
