Bossa Nova: Tradition or Contradiction.
The [r]evolution of a Musical Genre
- Tuesday May 30th 2006, 7:00pm - 9.00pm
Talk by Dr. Aquiles Brayner, Lecturer in Luso-Brazilian
Studies at Leeds University. Since its emergence in
the late 1950s, Bossa Nova has been influencing artists
and musical movements throughout the world. The aim
of this talk is to consider Bossa-Nova within the context
of Brazilian musical production expounding how the rework
of samba by the bossanovistas has blurred the dichotomies
between the concepts of ‘tradition’ vs.
‘innovation’; ‘national’ vs.
‘international’ and ‘popular’
vs. ‘erudition’ when applied to Brazilian
music. Based on the analysis of some musical pieces,
Dr. Brayner will highlight how the technical novelties
brought up by Bossa-Nova have revolutionised the musical
world inviting both artist and audience to share a common
(introspective and intimate) experience through music.

“It was good to show them that we are not animals
and that we don’t bite. There is a lot of prejudice
against us.” Ademir da Silva (Topete) –
Photography Participant
This
captivating exhibition is the result of several months
work by a group of Rio Street Children who were given
cameras and encouraged to express and document their
lives through photography. Inspired by the idea of
recording moments, for their beauty and excitement,
rather than trying to forget, the children have produced
a breathtaking body of work. The pictures that followed
tell a tale of a city that is at once magnificent
and violent, musical, passionate and brimming with
color. But the photographers also portray the city
and themselves in a sensitive light – asking
questions of a community that is trying hard to come
to terms with its own prejudices.
It
will stand as testament to what the children have
produced, an achievement all the more remarkable given
their personal backgrounds. We hope the exhibition
will truly inform our audience as much about the harsh
reality of these children’s lives as about their
genuine creativity, undeterminable spirit and the
real potential for social change. In collaboration
with LAB.
