SYNOPSIS

Dir: Eduardo Chamon, Brazil, 2003,15 min

"Catadores" is a documentary, which tackles the issue of unemployment, a fundamental problem in Brazil. The underlying storyline points to the environmental importance of recycling and the urgent need for a greater environmental awareness in Brazil today. The film portrays the lives of thousands of people who try and secure their economic survival through independent cooperatives, which collect and sell garbage for recycling. There are no pre-requisites for becoming a garbage collector; all kinds of people from heads of households, alcoholics, beggars and children- collect garbage in order to survive.

A SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Ed Chamon by himself
21 years old, born in Rio de Janeiro.

I started my theatre studies at "O Tablado" and had my acting debut at the age of 14.
Since then I have acted in more than 10 plays in Rio, some of them with important directors such as Domingos Oliveira, Maria Clara Machado, Karen Acioly, Pedro Vasconcelos and many others. I also took part in some soaps, TV series and short films. But I`ve never acted in a feature film...an old dream I have yet to fulfill.

The film which will be showcased in the III DLA Film Festival, Catadores/Scavengers, was the final project of my Film Course.

I am currently editing a filmed version of the play "Barrela", in the style of "Dogville". "Barrela was written by Plinio Marcos, directed by Roberto Bomtempo, with a brilliant cast such as Jonas Bloch, Roney Villela, Heitor Martinez, Silvio Guindane, Patrick de Oliveira and others. It was shot in the Teatro Villa-Lobos, in Rio de Janeiro, last July. The film will be released in mid-2005, when I plan to move back to Brazil.

At the moment I am in England to study English, and ironically I have a part time job selling popcorn in a multiplex.
